I have to be honest, Captain America was never one of my favorite Marvel Superheroes. Remember, I’m from the UK, so the whole patriotic red white and star spangled patriotism bit just doesn’t connect with me at all. If it makes my American readers feel better – I wasn’t into Captain Britain either. He was just sad!
So, Steve Rogers, The First Avenger. Not as physically strong as the other superheroes in the group. He can’t fly. Nothing shoots out of him with any kind of power that his enemies need to worry about. He does have super niceness going for him though. Such a nice man. The kind of guy a gal could happily take home to meet the family. Because no one is going to be unimpressed with Chris Evans after his turn in the Stark built inject-o-matic-superhero-maker!
The First Avenger is a very solid film. Kind-a-charming in an old fashioned Raiders of the Lost Ark kind of way. Chris Evans is pretty much perfect as our shield throwing superhero, and Hugo Weaving does a great job bringing Red Skull to the big screen. Kudos to the makeup department too! It has a decent story, and there’s a couple of nice supporting performances from Tommy Lee Jones and Hayley Atwell. There’s nothing especially ground-breaking about it. The visual effects are decent enough, and the score by Alan Silvestri is serviceable.
If you’ve been entertained by the other movies from Marvel Studios, you’ll likely enjoy this film. I imagine fans of the character will be happy with the movie too. It’s a solid action/adventure film that will kill a couple of hours in a pleasant enough way. Even if you’re not a big superhero fan. This is more Indiana Jones than Thor the God of thunder!
It’s decently made, and at the time of its theatrical release I’d suggest a matinee. A HD viewing at home is recommended.
Best character for me:
I really liked Hugo Weaving in this. A great villain. He’s so bad-ass he thinks Hitler is a joke! Loved his line near the beginning of the film.
‘And the Fuhrer digs for trinkets in the desert.’ A glorious reference to Raiders of the Lost Ark.
