Written and directed by the same team that got the franchise up and running in 2001. The Chamber of Secrets represents another solid outing for Harry and co. Only this time, the young leads are more comfortable in their roles. Also, thanks to the success of the first film, the budget for the sequel certainly increased and the visual effects are a lot better this time around.
It’s really only let down by an over the top performance by Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy), a slightly excessive running time, and a somewhat clumsily paced action finale. Other than those small gripes, I would say this second installment tells a good story, and expands nicely on the film’s universe. If you were still on the fence after Sorcerer’s Stone, I think Secrets will turn you into a fan!
If you’ve watched the first film an enjoyed it – I have no doubt you’ll enjoy The Chamber of Secrets. Possibly even more. If you haven’t seen the first film, or read the books, I still think you’ll be able to follow enough of Secrets to enjoy it.
The visual effects are better, so I suggest a nice big digital screen. At home a HD showing is recommended.
Best element for me:
The sequel introduces a few new faces. Some more welcome than others. I especially enjoyed Moaning Myrtle (Shirley Henderson) – who I think was given the best line in the film.
