Well that was a nice surprise. Jack Black returns as Po, the Dragon Warrior and Kung Fu fan boy, in the third and I’m going to say it – best – Panda adventure yet!
This is straight up awesomeness (as Po would say). A stunningly animated tale that strikes a lovely balance between a touching story about family and self-understanding, with all the great Kung Fu action you’d expect from this series. And while it does rely (yet again) on an old jilted friend/student for its villain, at least writers Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger try to inject some fun into the character by having him suffer the indignity of being the forgotten celebrity Kung Fu Master.
“Kai has returned!”
“The master of pain, beast of vengeance, maker of widows.”
Panda 3 doesn’t sit still for a second, but also doesn’t ruin its moments of tenderness with infantile humor or slapstick silliness. It’s a Panda movie that’s found inner peace, and balances all its story elements perfectly. It is geared slightly more for younger audiences, but its touching family story and dazzling visuals should entertain the entire family.
If you enjoyed Panda 1 and 2, then you should enjoy this third and perhaps last installment (for now at least). Expect slick beautiful animation and mostly slapstick action/humor.
This is a gorgeous film, and absolutely works best on a theater sized screen. If you wait for the rental get the HD version and watch it on the biggest TV you have.
Best Moment: << spoiler! >>
The final battle between Po and Kai in the spirit world is beautifully rendered and a lot of fun.
