It makes sense that in the forth installment of the Die Hard franchise, John McClane (Bruce Willis) would have to save an entire country. Being that in each film prior to this we’ve seen his adventure playgrounds evolve from a simple high rise building, to an airport, followed by the entire city of New York. Is there nothing this man cannot handle? Logically, his next mission should be to save the planet. But sadly the next installment in this beloved franchise doesn’t even save itself.
That being said, Live Free or Die Hard is a lot of fun. Frequently preposterous fun, but fun non the less. Willis is in his usual fine form as McClane, and this time around is very nicely supported by Justin Long as the computer hacker who accidentally gets involved in a scheme that shuts down most of the US. In this story, the boogieman is technology and the people who would misuse it. White and black hat hackers duke it out while McClane destroys things. The action is well filmed, but does have a tendency to get a little ridiculous.
It’s best if you don’t try to analyze this one to much. The action gets very crazy from time to time, so go into this if you’re in the mood for some simple mindless fun.
This is Die hard on a huge scale, so the best experience with this film would be on the big screen. At home a HD viewing for sure.
Best action moment for me: << mild spoiler >>
When the action works, it really works well. There’s a scene about half way through where McClane, and Mai Linh (Maggie Q) a super gorgeous yet evil computer genius martial arts expert (quite the resume) are having a fight in and around an SUV – which is trapped inside an elevator shaft. How it got there is actually one of the more ridiculous moments of the film. But the action that ensues as they both attempt to kill each other, while also trying to escape the elevator shaft before the SUV plummets to become a huge deadly fireball – is great fun to watch.
It was also fun to watch the incredible stunt work by Cyril Raffaelli. If you don’t know who that is, go and watch District 13 and/or District 13: Ultimatum.
