Sweet merciful heaven, this film sucked! The first film in this series, Olympus Has Fallen, was bad, but the sequel takes crapness to new dizzying heights. It’s bad to the point of an action movie parody. It takes everything that didn’t work in the first film, and doubles down on the awful.
The dialogue is bad, the CGI looks like it was created with an iPad app, and the plot is absurd. Once the action gets going, the film immediately falls apart. Anyone with more than two brain cells to rub together is not going to buy into this nonsense. If you wanted to see a Die Hard movie on a city sized scale, then just go and re-watch Die Hard with a Vengeance. A far superior film in every measurable way.
This was supposed to be a simple action movie, good guys v bad guys, but the distinction between the two here is a little grey. On several occasions our hero, Mike Banning (Gerard Butler) acts like a savage sadistic moron. This wasn’t a brave soldier defending his president while standing atop the moral high ground. This was a mean-spirited jerk delivering catharsis to those that cower behind guns, convinced there are terrorists around every corner.
Keep your expectations low for this one. If you found the first film in the series entertaining, then you might enjoy this. Expect over-the-top nonsense, cheesy dialogue, and bad CGI.
The CGI. Considering the budget, and the success of the first film, there really is no reason the special effects should look as bad as they do.
