Set on Earth in 2077, Oblivion is a post apocalyptic story centering around a drone repairman called Jack Harper (Tom Cruise). Earth is pretty much a waste land at this point. A beautifully shot wasteland, but still, not a great place for humans to live. Part of the reason for all this destruction was due to an alien force destroying the moon. The resulting gravitational shifts caused multiple earthquakes and floods, wiping out most of the human population. How that begins, proceeds and ends is a pretty interesting ride that I’ll let you discover on your own.
This is mostly an enjoyable sci-fi adventure film. As I said before it’s beautifully photographed, and the production design of the living accommodations, weapons and technology is fantastic. Tom Cruise also delivers yet another solid, and intense performance. It’s really only let down by a miscast Morgan Freeman, and a somewhat underwhelming finale. It also could have maybe lost about twenty minutes running time.
If you enjoy science fiction movies you’ll probably enjoy this. It’s a bleak, intense and humorless affair, but the technical aspects of the film are superb. If you’re not a big sci-fi movie fan, try to focus on the human element at the core of this story. It takes a while to get there, but the last shot of the film is very effective.
If this were still at the theaters I would strongly suggest a digital matinee. At home a HD show for sure.
Best element for me:
I loved the drone technology in this film. Picture a flying cue ball with four large guns attached, as designed by Apple! Very efficient, menacing, deadly, and yet really cool!
