Stop what you’re doing right now, and go see Pete’s Dragon! Put down the phone, close the browser (seriously, I don’t care if you finish reading this), and forget about weighing in on the latest trending nonsense online. There be magic in your local theater. If you delay, you might miss it.
Pete’s Dragon is incredibly charming, and good wholesome entertainment for the entire family. An old-fashioned fantasy adventure that’s not too proud to locate and tug every heartstring you have. You’ll root for Pete, and freaking love Elliot the dragon. And you won’t really care that the story takes some very predictable turns.
Once you’ve seen this film, I guarantee you’ll be looking for it on blu-ray in a few months. It’s one for the family collection my friends, and should take its rightful place on your bookshelf next to E.T. and The Iron Giant. I was at first skeptical about Disney’s plans to turn their old animated library into live action films, but so far, there hasn’t been a major misstep. The folks putting Pete’s Dragon together understood what it needed to be, and what we wanted from a story about a boy and his dragon. This film is loaded with wonder, excitement, and love, and it’s all waiting for you at the theater. Don’t miss it!
This is old-school fantasy storytelling, and it’s very charming. Expect a simple story, told well, that focuses on sentiment rather than realism.
Elliot the dragon looks amazing. The visual effects in this movie serve the story perfectly.
